Thoughts on the state of identity

I created these slides in response to a request 48 hours ago from Harry Halpin of the W3C’s social web experts group for a briefing on my views of the identity ecosystem.

SWXG 2010.6.9 v2

If I’d had a bit more notice I should have added a discussion of the oStatus stack, XDI, RDF syndication and other things related to the pubsub of attributes. And VRM.

  1. Facebook Connect vs. OpenID Connect: I guess we will have to wait and see how the battle plays out. Google is championing OpenID Connect. Google only cares about content, whereas other vendors care about stickiness i.e. how many users sign up for their app. At Google I/O this year, Google said that they might OpenID Buzz i.e. that the user won’t even have to sign up for a Google Account to use Buzz. Goes to show how less Google cares about stickiness.
